Method:

Ingredients:

  • onions - 5
  • tomatoes - 5
  • garlic - 6 flakes
  • chilli powder - 1 tsp
  • turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • salt - as required
  • cinnamon - 1 inch piece
  • cloves - 3

Grind together:

  • grated fresh coconut - 2 Tbl.sps
  • aniseed - 1/4 tsp

 

Method:

  • Chop onions and tomatoes.
  • Heat oil, add cinnamon, cloves, garlic, onions and then tomatoes.
  • Saute till moisture is absorbed.
  • Add salt, turmeric, chilli powder and little water.
  • Cook for few more minutes.
  • Add ground paste, with little more oil.
  • Fry till oil separates.

 

Tomato Chutney - 3

 

Ingredients:

  • small onions - 3/4 cup (peeled)
  • tomatoes - 5 (medium)
  • red chillies - 8
  • aniseed (sombu) - little
  • asafoetida - a pinch
  • salt, oil - as required

 

Method:

  • Chop tomatoes and grind with other ingredients to coarse paste.
  • Heat oil and fry the ground paste till oil separates.
  • Serve this with Vellai appam.

    Tomato Chutney - 4

     

    Ingredients:

    • big onions - 2 or 3
    • tomatoes - 7 (medium)
    • garlic - 4 flakes
    • ginger - 1/4 inch piece
    • green chillies - 3
    • salt - as required

    Roast and powder:

    • red chillies - 3
    • dhania - 1 tsp

     

    Method:

    • Chop onions length wise, and tomatoes finely.
    • Heat little oil and fry green chillies, garlic, onions and then tomatoes, till moisture is absorbed.
    • Add ginger paste with salt and " well.
    • Mix dhania powder just before removing from fire.

    Tomato Chutney - 5

     

    Fry in oil separately:

    • onions - 3
    • tomatoes - 5 (medium)
    • green chillies - 3

    Fry in little oil and powder :

    • mustard - 3 pinches
    • red chillies - 3
    • black gram dhal - 1 tsp
    • fenugreek - 2 pinches
    • dhania - 1 1/2 tsps
    • curry leaves - 2 springs

     

    Other Ingredients:

    • coriander leaves - 1 small bunch
    • tamarind - gooseberry sized
    • salt - as required

    Method:

    • Chop onions and tomatoes.
    • Fry in oil green chillies, onions and tomatoes till moisture is absorbed.
    • Grind it along with powdered ingredients, coriander leaves, tamarind and salt.
    • Heat little oil and tamper with mustard, cumin seeds.
    • Mix with the chutney.
